  1. If you want it to look professional, you should buy the domain. You can get it anywhere on the web and its not too expensive...  Then you need to get hosting which is the more expensive part. I suggest Dreamhost (www.dreamhost.com)

If you don't mind a free domain (for a business it's better to get a paid domain) you can get one at freewebs.com. They also provide paid domains...

    Good luck

  2. You have some great advice there already.  I believe that for your website to be effective you should have it professionally done.  This will help you to get up to speed much faster and have your website turning a profit in the shortest possible time.  I don't suggest you learn on this one.

As for the domain name, your domain may still be available if your Dad paid for more that 1 year of ownership.  If it is available, don't just use it.  Give it some thought.  Experience has shown that a domain name that incorporates some of your major keywords  will help people to see your site in a more credible light, increasing the opportunities for sales.

Finally, you will have lots of choices for hosting, ranging from $5 - $30 a month.  A lot of people swear by Host gator, (see their link below).  This is primarily because they allow you to host unlimited domain names without constantly raising your fees.

I wish you much success with your project.

  4. Begin with setting up your own webpage as your current internet provider will provide free hosting as discussed below.

If you are currently a paid Internet subscriber, you are entitled to a "homepage" which often contains simple navigation and editing tools. And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool which is totally free. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage by FTPing your webpages created in NotePad, Word, FrontPage, or DreamWeaver.

Nevertheless, the "homepage" URL is likely to be "http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscribe... name" and that URL can easily be overwritten via a redirection service, i.e., "mydomain.com" which allows you to link any registered domain name to "mask" another website. For example, should you type in the "domain name," you will be immediately transported to the homepage and the hompage URL of http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber... a homepage URL which will be masked by the domain name. And the charge for the redirection service [even at godaddy.com] is normally FREE.  The redirection option is also referred to as "forwarding URL" with "masking" of a parked domain name at Godaddy.com.

When you acquire a domain name, connect it using a redirection service [as discussed above] and submit/publish the domain name on major search engines/directories in order for Net surfers to find your website.

    Good luck!

  5. Building and designing a website is the first step.  If the main purpose of the website is to give information to people that's already contacted your fathers business, then building/hosting it is all you have to worry about; Godaddy.com is goof.  However, if you want people who are searching for his services on the Internet to find his website, you will need a pay per click program.  I can make some recommendations on companies that can do both for you at reasonable prices.

  6. You can use Adobe Dreamweaver.  You would have to buy it.  Otherwise you can set up a blog on something like wordpress.org     You would have to purchase a domain too from somewhere too..like godaddy.com

  7. You can go to some places that allow you to build free websites. One of those is freewebs.com . You are given several sample pages that you can choose from. When you get to them, you can put your information into text boxes. You also would be allowed to include pictures, etc. For an example of a site built at freewebs.com, you could go to http://www.freewebs.com/drrandycarney/ . I understand that another place like that is godaddy.com.

You also can go to Squidoo.com and set up what they call a "lens" which is like a website or a blog. Some places where you can set up free blogs are Wordpress.com , blogger.com . Some examples of those are: http://rcarney6.wordpress.com/ and http://randysarticles.blogspot.com/ . A squidoo lens looks like http://www.squidoo.com/betteroffnow .

All of these have handy templates that allow you to put in your information. Usually, you will have to purchase a domain name, and you will have to have web hosting, which can usually be set up for a monthly charge. Some of these may provide web hosting for you if you allow them to run their advertisements on your site. The freewebs.com site listed above is like that.

If you use a free website for a while until you find out what you do like and what you need to have, later you could build your own using software designed to do that. You also can hire people to build a site for you. Elance.com may have some that would want to bid on your job.

  8. Try Weebly or Blinkweb, their easy to manage free website (or blog) has cool features that include drag and drop capability, switch designs on the fly, youtube and google video, custom html, upload images, flikr photo gallery, visitor stats and more.  You can also buy a new domain instantly, or host your existing domain for free.

If your looking for something more advanced but still user friendly then try CityMax or Site Builder Designs, they have everything you need in building your own website: domain name registration or domain transfer, web hosting, web builder, site maintenance and email accounts. Everything is laid out in an easy to follow step by step instruction. Some of the features included enable you to add your own themes, videos, images or mp3 music making your site unique to you. Pricing is comparable and affordable too.

As for the domain that your dad bought if it is still valid he can use it and transfer it to any of the site builders.

I hope that I was of some help and answered your question.

  9. First you would need web hosting, http://www.Godaddy.com would be an excellent choice, it is one of the best web hosting companies on the web.

After that you would need to set up a website. If you would like a custom built website anywhere from 1-5 pages you can contact me. I'm a Web designer also a Graphic designer specializing in Logos, Websites, and Business Cards.
