How do you set up an old speaker system with an old TV?

I've just inherited an old 5.1 surround system, and have no idea how to set it up. I've got 10m of speaker wire to run from the sub woofer to the surround speakers, but don't know how to connect the subwoofer to the tv (which is old and has one scart port, front and back A/V connection and, as far as I can see, that's it). What am I doing wrong? Which part needs to connect to the tv? Is there a cable missing?

  1. The speaker need to be connected to a 5.1 surround sond receiver. Then the tv would get connected to the receiver in the tv input....depending if your tv has a audio out.

  2. Unless there is an amplifier built into the television then you will need to purchase a 5.1 amplifier to plug the speakers into. Then to get true surround you will either need to upmix the signal from a stereo input or you can get some amplifiers which take a 5.1 signal from a scart lead.

I don't think you will just be able to 'wire' the speakers into the television unless you have a built in amplifier, sorry :o(

  3. You have to eaither wire the speakers and sub into the surround sound (If you can) Or get a surround sound that supports it. Then you get the Red and white av cable and plug it into the tv :)

  4. your speakers sud have a plug in jack, just plug it in ur tv where it says Phones/headphones, if you do not have this option on ur tv thn i think u need a cable click here for details(find out wot connector u have gt first)

  5. Your old TV may not have any audio output port (line out). The A/V connection is for DVD/VCD player connect to TV.

Unless for the scart port, if it is output scart, you may have a chance to get a scart adapter that can convert to video out & audio out, and you can connect the audio out to your speakers (just 2 channels).

  6. i think you have a cable missing :/
