  1. It depends on which type. I have a Fluke 199 auto ranging scope. Normally you plug in the lead first and make sure you have an earth clip to connect to the negative or neutral reference point. Then you set the amplitude in Volts for the signal you expect to get. You also have to select AC or DC or AC and DC to check for the correct signal If you want to measure the waveform from your power supply set it to AC only to not get an offset. Then you put the probe on the signal point and adjust the time base until the signal is clear. You can then play with the sweep and trigger if you want to live on the edge.
