Question:

How do you sew a rolled hem on very delicate chiffon?

Ahhh.. I thought my woes and stresses were over with after my last question but no !

I'm making a dress with a crinkle chiffon overlay - it is the most frustrating material everrrr - and I know a rolled hem is what I'm supposed to create but slight glitch in the plan.

I have no idea how you're supposed to keep the 'roll' in place whilst sewing it ?? =[

Everytime (no matter how careful I am) I put it under the footer it just comes undone, even pinning it doesn't help and it seems like it will take foreverrrr..

Any advice would be so appreciated ! This dress is a major project for my HSC, due tomorrow morning =/ Ahhhhh.

  1. Your fastest ways out are probably

    1) roll hemming on a serger

    2) baby hem, a la Claire Shaeffer's book on couture sewing

    3) hand rolled hem (which is often the fastest for me).

I'm assuming you don't have a serger handy, but if you do:

When you have time, take some of your scrap chiffon and learn to use the narrow hemmer on the sewing machine... the instructions in Carol Ahles' book Fine Machine Sewing are the best I've ever seen, but it does take practice.

  2. Oh dear!!!!  Chiffon is a right bugger to sew - no doubt about it!

I always hand hem - especially when it's a very delicate slippery fabric.

The best way to do it, either machine or hand, is to fold the hem, and then press it with an iron.  This should help to hold it in place.

But - hand hemming will give you the best result.  Use a simple hemming slip stitch and it will stay  in place.

To make the chiffon come up nicely when you finish it, press all seams and the hem with a cool iron  Pressing the seams open gives a very professional finish.

  4. Hello,

Have you thought about first using stitch witch in smaller pieces of course in order to keep the chiffon's hem where you want it.  I believe it may be a solution to your problem and can be found anywhere they sell sewing supplies.  Good Luck....////Tyger/////
