Question:

How do you sew a torn swimsuit?

My dad bought me this new, expensive two-piece and I ripped it on the bottom when I wore it the second time (just next to the hem). How do I sew it up and make it stay, since I'm sure that something like thread wouldn't be waterproof?

  1. When you sew your suit, pull it taut, it should retract after you have sewn it together.  Also, many threads today are nylon.  You will be fine.

Hope you don't get an embarrassing sunburn.

  2. Any common polyester sewing thread should work. Cotton does not have enough natural elasticity.  Repair the tear with the fabric slightly stretched, or use a stretch stitch on the sewing machine.  If you haven't done this sort of repair before, I'd suggest taking it to an alterationist, often found at dry cleaners, and have him/her repair it, especially because swimming suit bottoms are often lined and the lining will have to be opened for repairs, most likely.

  3. Sew it like you normally would but take into account the stretch of the suit.  Also remember that its probably going to be noticeable.
