  1. There are cool 7 speed shifters from SRAM, Shimano and Sunrace.  Grip Shift pairs are available on EBAY (www.ebay.com  - Sporting Goods category - Cycling (Mt. Bike Parts).  If you have time to drop by a bike shop, ask the technician or mechanic to have it installed for you---its a simple job for them). Shimano has the Alivio and LX shifter kits too and are 'pods' equipped for those who find grip shifts 'inconvenient'.

  2. Gears are kind of counterintuitive. If you ride on the smaller gears in the back you'll go fast momentarily, but tire out fast. If you spin at 90 to 120 rpms revolutions per minute you'll have better luck with finishing the ride if it's a long ride.

For going up hills you have to go to a smaller gear on the front derailleur and a larger one in the back. Again you want to spin up a hill. If it's a short hill one can power-up a hill using combination of momentum and powering up by standing up on the pedals keeping your backside mostly over the seat and swinging the bike side to side slightly to add to the power of the foot stroke.
