  1. First you have to go to your local freight yard. You will have to fill out several forms and will be given a date that they can transport your vehicle. don't be in a hurry because it could be months. Once you get the A-OK and pay the freight which includes insurance etc. But be advised, if there is a lean on your vehicle, they won't transport it without written consent. Be prepared to pay several thousands on dollars if using Amtrak. CSX is your best bet.

  2. Thomas-

I will assume that you are referring to how you would ship your own car by rail.

Amtrak has such a service available to customers.

However, if you contact the railroad in your area they may offer some answers too.

Though, I still think, regardless of fuel prices, you may sill find it cheaper to either drive the vehicle yourself to its new location, or ship by truck.

I hope that answers your question, good luck!

  3. Cars and trucks are transported by rail using enclosed and locked (for protection from theft) rail cars called autoracks that feature three levels of storage (I think each car can handle 15-20 vehicles).  Years ago these cars used to be completely open but for better protection from the elements and thieves are now completely enclosed.
