How do you sign a letter?

What is the standard way of signing for somebody, like for example if the boss is not her somebody writes a non official letter? I see sometimes that people sign and they put “c/o” and have the name of the buss printed underneath. What does “c/o” mean, in command of?

I see that others write “for” after their signature.

Thanks for your help.

  1. c/o means "care of" like another person or department would open the letter instead of the intended person. Lets say I'm writing to Bill Gates to ask him for advice. Work with me here, lol. I would write

    Bill Gates

    c/o Microsoft Corporation

5555 Rose Lane etc. (or wherever they are located)

Another way you can use care of is when you are sending a letter to a company but you need it to go to a specific department...

    State Public University

    c/o Admissions and Records

    5555 Rose Dr.

btw, always sign your letters "sincerely" don't use "xoxo" or anything cheesy like that.

"Care of, usually abbreviated as c/o on envelopes, signifies an intermediary who is responsible for transferring a piece of mail between the postal system and the final addressee. For example when the addressee has no standard address, is under a corporate mail system, or is being manually forwarded mail sent to a more accessible location." <-- from wikipedia on how to use "care of"
