Question:

How do you sing properly using your diaphram?

People say I have a good voice but I know I'm singing incorrectly, through my nose instead of my diaphram. But whenever I try I don't hear or feel any difference.

Can someone tell me how to do it properly, please?

Thank you in advance.

  1. When you inhale use those diaphragm muscles.  You shouldn't see your chest and shoulders move much.  The diaphragm pushes the lungs to move to inhale and exhale.  Keep trying and you'll get it.  Then keep practicing!  I've been out of school for a LONG time and still use that method.

  2. Watch someone breathe when they are asleep.  You'll see their belly fill up with air when they breathe in, and relax when they breathe out.  This is the proper way to breathe.

Next, lie down on the floor, and gently breathe in.  You should fill your belly with air....don't force it to happen...just LET it happen.

Then, stand up and try to breathe the same way.  Your shoulders should not move when you breathe in.

Now, fill your belly with air, and hold it in.  Then, hiss lightly with an Ssssssss sound, letting out just a little air.  Time yourself to see how long you can hiss.  This will build your diaphragm muscle, and allow you to hold notes for a long time.  Continue this exercise, and you'll be able to hiss for a longer time every day.

When you sing, think about only letting out a little bit of air with the sound.  This will give your voice better clarity and tone.

While you are singing, gently squeeze your nostrils closed with your thumb and forefinger.  If you notice a big difference, you're letting too much air out through your nose.

Keep a "yawn" space at the back of your throat, and let your voice reverberate there when you sing.

    Good luck!
