  1. With equations, what you do to one side of the equals sign you must do to the other. So, in this case, you need to add four to each side of the equals sign so that you get x on its own.

    So, step by step:

                                      3x-4=0

    (add 4 to both sides)

                                      3x(cancel out the 4)=0+4

    (re-write)

                                      3x=4

    (divide both sides by 3, so that you get x on its own)

                                     3x/3 = x

                                     4/3 = 1 1/3 (1.3333333recurring)

    So    x=1 1/3            (1 and one third


  2. add 4 to both sides:

    3x-4 = 0

        +4  +4

    that leaves 3x = 4

    divide both sides by 3...

    that will give you x = 4/3...

    x = 1.3333333333
