square root of (x+1) = square root of (x+6) -1

  1. (i don't know what it is called, but...)

    square both sides of the equation, and go from there...

    ( SQRT(x+1) ) ^ 2 = ( ( SQRT(x+6) ) - 1) ^ 2

    the right side will be a little tricky (pay attention to the parentheses above) since you have to use the polynomial sqaring rules (hint)

    the left side is easy:

    (x+1)  = ( ( SQRT(x+6) ) - 1)  *  ( ( SQRT(x+6) ) - 1)

    there is one caveat, though:

    make sure to check your answers in the original equation!
