  1. Solve for y in the first equation...

    y=5-3x

    substitute that equation for y in the second equation...

    -2x+3(5-3x)=4

    solve for x

    -2x+15-9x=4

    -11x=-11

    x=1

    --------

    put 1 into either equation and solve for y

    3(1)+y=5

    y=2

    --------

    The other persone that answered this was wrong, their answer does not satisfy both equations.

    Now, from your post, it sounds like your techer wanted you to solve this by graphing. If you solve both equations for y:

    y=5-3x

    y=(4/3)+(2/3)x

    and you plot them, they will create 2 lines. Where they intersect is the solution. They will intersect at (1,2)

  2. y=5-3x

    -2x+3y=4

    -2x+3(5-3x)=4

    -2x+15-9x=4

    -11x=-11

    x=1

    3+y=5

    y=2

  3. x= -1

    and y=8
