  1. Each of these questions has an instruction sign = multiply, divide, add, subtract ... use the instruction side as though it was a separation marker - now each of the questions is in two parts ....

    a) -2x AND THEN divide by 6 (remember two negatives make a positive - 'my enemy's frend is my enemy, my enemy's enemy is my friend) .....so what would 6 divie into to give 0? then you can work out what x means....

    b) is easy ... you are subtracting 7 from something to end up with 22, so if you ADD 7 to 22 you get 29, how many times will 5 go into 29 will tell you what x is ...

    c)  the same idea with this one, every time you divide by 10 you take a nought off, every time you multiply by 10 you add a nought on ... so herre you must multiply 14 by 10 = 140 ... how many times will 4 go into 140 will tell you what x is.....

    d) if your answer is 9 and you start with 6, what number can you take from 6 to give 9 (remember that two negatives make a positive - so you preteden r is a negative number - so now it looks like 6 - -3 which really means 6 add on 3 = 9

  2. a)-2x + 6 = 0

    add 2x to both sides

    6 = 2x

    divide by 2 both sidess

    3=x

    b) 5x – 7 = 22

    add 7 both sides

    5x = 22+7 = 29

    5x = 29

    divide by 5 both sides

    x = 29/5 = 5 4/5

    c)4x + 10 = 14

    subtract10 from both sdies

    4x = 4

    divide by 4 both sides

    x = 4/4 = 1

    d) 6 – r = 9

    add r to both sides

    6=r+9

    subtract9 from both sides

    6*9=-3=r

  3. It looks to me like they only take 2 steps to solve?

    a) -2x = -6

    then divide by -2

        x=3

    b) 5x=29

    divide by 5

    x=29/5

    c) 4x=4

    divide by 4

    x=1

    d) -r = 3

    divide by -1

    r=-3

  4. a.) -2x + 6 = 0 (subtract 6 from both sides)

    -2x + 6 - 6 = 0 - 6

    -2x = -6 (divide both sides by -2)

    -2x/-2 = -6/-2

    x = 3 <===ANSWER

    b.) 5x - 7 = 22 (add 7 to both sides)

    5x - 7 + 7 = 22 + 7

    5x = 29 (divide both sides by 5)

    5x/5 = 29/5

    x = 29/5 or 5.8 <===ANSWER

    c.) 4x + 10 = 14 (subtract 10 from both sides)

    4x + 10 - 10 = 14 - 10

    4x = 4 (divide both sides by 4)

    4x/4 = 4/4

    x = 1 <===ANSWER

    d.) 6 - r = 9 (subtract 6 from both sides)

    6 - r - 6 = 9 - 6

    -r = 3 (multiply or divide both sides by -1)

    -r/-1 = 3/-1

    r = -3 <===ANSWER

    The goal is to isolate the variable on one side of the equation. In order to do this, you must use the opposite operation of what is being applied. In other words, when there is addition, use subtraction, and when there is multiplication, use division, and vice versa.

  5. Add opposites, then divide by the number in front of the variable.

    a)-2x + 6 = 0  (add - 6 to both sides)

    -2x = -6  divide both sides by -2

    x = 3

    b) 5x – 7 = 22  (add 7 to both sides)

    5x = 29

    x = 29/5

    c)4x + 10 = 14 (add -10 to both sides)

    4x = 4

    x = 1

    d) 6 – r = 9  (add -6 to both sides)

    - r = 3  (divide by -1)

    r = - 3

    Good luck to you and keep practicing !

  6. move all the const to one side of the eq

    -2x + 6 = 0

    -2x = -6

    divide both side by the coeff of x

    x = 3

    5x - 7 = 22

    5x = 29

    x = 29/5

  7. a)

    -2x = -6

    x = 3

    b)

    5x = 29

    x = 29/5

    c)

    4x = 4

    x = 1

    d)

    -r = 3

    r = -3
