  1. The previous answer is about the best you will get. You are asking for the cliff notes of a game that's been around for over 30 years. Impossible. Bottome line stop being cheap and get the books. You only need the 3  core books Players handbook, Dungeon masters Guide, and Monster Manual.

I would suggest using the prepackaged modular adventures to start. That will give you an idea how an adventure is crafted and how it shouls flow, what it looks like and how the  stats of monsters and NPC's should appear. Crafting your own interesting adventure can be difficult but it can be done with a little prep time. Start by building from the inside out. Build the adventures and then let the world grow around that.

  2. The paper version of the game should have 2 people, a player and a referee.

Put simply, the referee draws or downloads a map. He places obstacles or monsters around the map. Then the player moves his character around the map.

The short list of books is a Players Handbook, a Dungeon Master's Guide for the referee, and a Monster Manual that describes monsters that players fight. Players should not read the last 2 books, it spoils the surprises. A set of dice, pencils, and paper.

The company that makes the rulebooks is putting out a new set of rulebooks, the 4th edition. They are going to try and get everyone to use them.

A lot of people use older versions of the rules. You can get these older rules books as downloads from various websites cheap. Look into the differences in editions. See what your friends might be interested in.

Miniatures are not mandatory. At least they should not be. You could just as well use chess pieces or pieces of paper with a picture drawn on it, or at the least the player's name on one and another with "monster" written on it.

  3. For a full explanation of everything.... you'll have to read the books. It is virtually impossible to condense everything you're asking for into a single page...or even a single chapter. Since I could literally spend hours writing up everything you need to know just to get started it's much easier to just read the books. You'll need them to play the game anyway.

However I can give you some of the basic things you'll need before you start.

I'm going to assume you're starting from scratch and don't already have friends that play.

1st thing you need is a group. Simple enough talk your friends into playing, select a Dungeon Master and get started.

2nd thing you need is the books. It is absolutely too complex to play without the books (unless you go into free form roleplaying which is fine for some people but I prefer the structured nature of the rules for things like combat and physical activities)

3rd. As for miniatures.... 1st - 3rd edition can be played reasonably well without them though they do help. 4th edition can be played without them but I highly recommend them for 4th edition due to the number of effects that depend on positioning and such.

4th. Dice, you'll need at minimum 1d20 (which is a shortened form of a 20 sided die, the others follow the same naming convention) 1d12,  1d10, 1d8, 1d6, 1d4. I'd recommend at least 2 or 3 of each though if you're going to be playing a lot.

    5th. And most important: Imagination.

That should get you started, have fun.
