How do you start your professional acting career?

I've known for a long time that I want to pursue acting professionally. I have some experience with local theater companies and such. Besides moving to a bigger city, what are the immediate things you have to do to jump start your career as an actor/actress? I know it's a long process/ journey, but it just seems really confusing. Where do you start?

  1. All acting careers start right where you are, doing school and community plays. Your next step is to take professional acting classes while continuing to act in the school and community theatre. Use these classes and plays to build a strong resume which will impress an agent when you submit for representation a few years down the road. There are also about three books you could read to improve your knowledge of the field of acting and the business of having a professional career.  Your reading list and choice of classes should be guided by a mentor, which is what I do at no charge for aspiring actors.

  2. First off, where are you currently located? The last thing you want to do is just jump on a bus and rush to L.A. where everyone and their mama is wanting to be a famous actor. My advice would be to make it big where you're at first. It's great that you've got theater experience, it's something to build up your resume. Look in your area for some acting classes. Gain more experience in your area and build up a strong enough resume. And a nice headshot helps too. Are you interested in just theater? Or television/film too?
