I never pick up hitchers. Not worth the risk.

Have someone else hold a gun on them while you drive. Just kidding. But aside from that there is no way. It's sad that we can't help out a person in need because of the horrendous actions of a few. There are people that hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers in order to victimize people.
