I live behind a major supermarket chain and the noise from the big trucks pulling in and out at all hours along with the noise from the coolers or whatever they are on the roof is driving me crazy. How do I stop the noise from ruining my life.

  1. maybe you can sound proof the room you sleep in. or at least the wall and window facing the direction the sound is traveling from

  2. The noise isn't going to go away, so the most you can do is hope to reduce what you hear. You can sound proof your home a few ways, Plant thick bushes between your house and the noise, if you have a pool, cover it, the sound is amplified by the water. Soft surfaces absorb sound, hard surfaces reflect sound. Heavy drapes on windows, extra insulation in walls. The other way to approach it is to mask the noise, there are machines like radios that create a soothing sound that will help make the noise less noticable. The last and cheapest suggestion is learn to live with ear plugs.

  3. you can't... move

  4. Build a sound barrier between you and the store.

Brick of concrete block walls work the best.

  5. ask the supermarket to put shrubs and trees between your home and the noise.... they probably want to be good neighbors but dont know they are disturbing you....  give it a shot.. all they can do is say no..

  6. The noise is necessary since we like to go pick up eggs and milk and meat and such without getting sick, but there's a few things you can do in your home to make it less disturbing.

-Close windows and doors at night

-Get a nature sounds or white noise CD to sleep with

    -Get houseplants

-If you can, insulate or install double pane gas-filled windows (these have drastically cut the street noise in my house)

    -Use drapes instead of blinds

-Use fabric wall art, such as a nice Navajo rug

-In a pinch pin up moving blankets to absorb the sound

-Yoga/meditation can help to not be as sensitive to outside noises

  7. There is 1 major thing to consider with this question.  Were the houses there before the grocery store or vice-versa?  If the store was there first, then you really can't complain about the noise.  You can't move next to an airport and complain about planes flying overhead.  If the houses were there first, then you can get a petition signed by the majority of neighbors, take it to the County Office of Zoning and see if they can implement a Quiet Zone for the store.  This would entail that trucks and activity behind the store can only be conducted between set times.  Good luck.

  8. 1) find out if there is a no idling bylaw in your community.Go to town office and speak to bylaw officer

2)find out if there is a noise bylaw in your community. In some communities there is bylaws on heavy truck activity in residential areas
