  1. Have you taken him to the vet?  If this is out of character it could be a urinary tract infection.

  2. You need to get him fixed, that will stop him. Also make sure you clean up the pee really good, because once they smell it there they will continue to pee there.

  3. First, make sure that you keep his litterbox clean.  Don't change litters (as in different brands).  Find a brand you like and stay with it.  Cats HATE it when you change litter brands.  Make sure the box is no where near his food/water.  He doesn't like to eat and pee in the same room.

Next, clean everything he's peed on VERY well.  He can smell what he peed on before and he's marking his territory.  Get some pet odor spray that is good for urine smell.  There are several that work pretty good.  Spray it wherever you catch him.

Finally, go to your local pet store and tell them what's going on.  There's a little plug in device you can get (looks like an air freshener plug in) that emits a pheromone smell that stops them from peeing.  I can't recall what its called anymore, but I got mine at pet-co.  Works great, but it takes a day or so.

Mostly, don't punish the cat AFTER he's peed.  If you find urine, don't rub his nose in it, yell, whatever.  The cat will NOT understand why you're yelling and it won't help.

Neutering him WILL help a bit, but it won't always solve the problem.  However, neutering will make sure he stops marking his territory for "tomcat" reasons.

  4. Have you had him neutered?  If not, do it NOW, although sometimes once a male cat starts doing it, he won't stop even if he is fixed.

Also, is he spraying on walls and doors or outright peeing on stuff?  If it's the latter, he might have a urinary tract infection, so get him checked out at the vet.

If none of the above applies, has there been some change in his life that is stressing him out?  A new dog, baby or other cat?  If not, if you take him to the shelter he will be nuked.  Best to make him an outdoor kitty if you're in a safe neighborhood.

  5. Well...you can think about having him neutured...but just because he's going potty doesn't mean he has to go!  My cat 'Brutus' is just under 1yrs, as well.  I never had him neutured and he does his 'duties' either in his litter box (located beside my toilet), or outside in the garden.  It took a couple of months of some serious 'potty-training' ,but he did catch on.  He never pee's anywhere in the house,...yet!  Maybe I should knock on wood or something, eh?  I am very close with my cat and he does listen to me real well, so I'm not all that worried.  Maybe he's just a slow learner!  Good-Luck!
