How do you stop living in sin?

Paul said "that which I will to do, I do not. That which I will not to do, that I do" or something like that. How does a Christian stop themselves from doing things contrary to the word of God?

don't care about what anyone else thinks of you and do what you feel is right. but by follwing your heart, don't give into temptation and desire. they'll get you nowhere.

A true Christian is not sinless, ... but they sin less and less and less...

Sanctification is a growth process. ... like a tree bringing forth fruit: you must BEGIN with surrender to the Lordship of Christ.

Prayer and meditation on the Word of GOD is a great help. also: encouragement from other likeminded Christians.

Read some good books by Chuck Swindoll. he is a great Biblical teacher and writer.

first read yoyr bible so you know what He wants of you then try to the best of your ability to do that which He considers righteous when you try "to the best of your ability" even if u mess up a little God says, literally, you did try as hard as you could therefor I stamp this approved

I get busy. I distract myself with YA, exercise, bike rides, sports, walking, hiking, observing nature, hot baths, reading Reader's Digest, listening to National Public Radio...Personal interests, hobbies. What interests you? religion? Atheism? There are books about everything! Educate yourself! Knowledge is power!

Can you be the first scientist to discover the "free energy" that Ayn Rand talked about in her fiction Novel "Atlas Shrugged"? Why shouldn't energy be free? available to all? why not water power rushing on rivers? or wind energy? why not free?

How can you focus on yourself when people are starving in this world? How can you help? Do you have new ideas? (I debate feeding them because it may be rather boring in Africa with no internet, phone, cable TV or RUNNING water & flush toilets, no tennis shoes on their feet... what is there left to do , but make more starving babies?) Well, I guess we could try to educate them about  abstinence (? will that be birth control enough? to combat our lustful human desires?). I do not have all the answers! I know what I CAN do! I can pray for them! I can pray for others!

Romans 8:26 "In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness; for we do not know what prayers to offer nor in what way to offer them. But the Spirit Himself pleads for us in yearnings that can find no words," When you are to sad for words,to defeated by sin,  the Holy Spirit will pray the words for you!

EDIT: Oh! You know what?! We never stop because of Original Sin! We will ALWAYS be tempted! (In Mathews, Jesus said it is a sin if lust enters our heart or mind or something like that! We don't even have to act on it, for it to be a sin! yikes! it puts the negative energy out there, just thinking about sin!) Lucky, for us, God gave us his only son, Jesus Christ to bridge the gap! The only way to salvation is through Jesus, not through good works/thoughts alone!

Please note the story doesn't stop there, but moves on to Chapter 8, which is a chapter of victory and overcoming.

If you look at chapter 7, the key words are all "I", "Me", "My";

but as you get into chapter 8 it is all "Christ". "Spirit". "God" -

it is by looking away from ourselves and laying hold of the gift of God.

Usually, the biggest struggle for Christians is to break free from a "works righteousness" mentality, and come into a place where they accept the fact that they ARE righteous, through faith, not through fleshly efforts, and the Spirit of Christ DOES live in them, and He delights to do the will of God.

Be patient with yourself.

God is for you, He wants to justify you, not condemn you.

Indeed the key is realizing that you are not condemned, but you are justified, by faith in what jesus has accomplished for you.

As often as you fail, come, confessing your sin, accept the gift of forgiveness, and get back to the business of life.

Seek to walk in love, because "love covers a multitude of sins"

"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. "

I John 1:8-2:2

Begin to boldly proclaim this in faith until you see it manifested in your life:

"For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace."

Say by faith: "Sin shall not be my master, because I am not under law, but under grace"

And let the power of God's word prove itself true. Only know that a seed doesn't grow up over night.

By making deliberate efforts and by fervently requesting God to provide us with the power to resist evil temptations. A true Christian loves his fellow beings the same way he loves himself. When one lives in love, he can not harm anyone.

You can't. What Paul was saying that no matter how hard he tried not to sin, its was his own nature that he unintentionally sin because according to the Bible "we are born sinners". It was Adam's disobedience in the garden of Eden that condemn mankind forever. That's why our carnal nature is in constant war with the indwelling spirit. If not for Jesus who sacrifice with His life paid our debt calvary and subsequently redeem and restore to a state of grace. In other words, God gave us another chance and save us from His destruction. That is why as sinners we must turn from our wicked ways. For example, When I commit a sin, I immediately know it and I must commune with God through prayer. I confess to the sin, I repent to the sin and I regenerate because I believe and confess that Jesus is the son of God. Since He is the Son of God, He is my mediator to the Father requesting that I be forgiven. But I also understand that the wages of sin is death meaning the more I commit any transgression the further my spiritual decay becomes and could eventually lead to complete alienation from God. That is why God punishes sinners so that we learn our lesson and return to the way, the truth and the life. Again, I must say that what I am saying is only what I know and understand about the scriptures. Furthermore, I believe that being a christian is a progressive process to which one spends much time seeking God's wisdom and understanding. I fall short of the Glory of God because I am who I am. I tend to walk by faith but sometimes I loose my way because my eyes being the windows of my soul, I forget that God is my shield of faith and Hope. My conscience warns me that in my carnal state, there is nothing good. That is why I strive to seek God in everything I do because without a  personal relationship with God, I would be lost.

Just for you to know the truth

There have to be a purpose for life otherwise we will miss the peaceful path of happiness so we want to be just better everyday

So, spiritually, what is God? , What’s makes God as god? , What is God’s Power? , For all sort of these questions, I have very limited understanding so Let me give you the point. Well, just try to know, what’s makes God as god, the Power, isn’t it? So what the power can do? Ah? Well, it can give the ability to organise all things & it can give the ability to separate everything and most importantly, the Ability to control everything, isn’t it? Isn’t it good? Ah? So, what I try to say here is, from my hard study and research effort with the help from god, I realized that the ability to control everything, the Power of God is gradually increased in the full amount to use so; The Power of God is always the omnipotent and existed among everything. & The God now is always the same omnipotent for us, who is organised us and we are growing towards perfection. The perfection is the final stage, not the end. & The Power of God, the Ability is the reward for us to control everything in a proper manner, like the true God of goodness. & Everlasting Happiness is the final stage. & it cannot come alone without the final stage perfection of God. & if god always perfect in perfection then there have to be beginning with God for the organizing progress of all things. So, there is No end and also No beginning for all things, including this on going organizing progress. So we cannot get anything from nothing. & how could that be possible to be perfect in perfection always, ah…? No way has the perfection of god come first or the growth towards perfection. There is No End and there is No beginning and so the Ability is for the Love of Joy & ~ LOVE IS THE ABILITY ~

If you don’t still agree, then note this important point: - you can use any thing for Good or Bad so, whenever possible If you ask the god for the good reason to give you the ability perfection, because of your obedience, then the God will give you, if the god is good and Almighty. Simple logical prove (the evidence) for this concept. So,

If you are humble, please... Pray to know the truth from true God by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit with great faith and. Good in Bad & Bad in Good so the values are most important. God gave us the rights to do what is right for you & sometimes, things can be right in your point of view but wrong in Public point of view so Basically, just pray about it for the Good Answer and try to do the God's will first always & If you think, why so much trouble and pain in this world…? Then there is only one reason, without pain, No pleasure and without pleasure, no pain. So without them, we cannot enjoy this life so always we need them in our development towards the perfection of God. So-so you use pain and pleasure instead of pain and pleasure use you. I mean the vision of your future should be clear & it have to pull you rather than you have to push so you must link a lot of pleasure in order to succeed in the Best job. When you feel strong enough links a lot of pleasure in your subconscious mind and your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure. & It is wonderful nature for us by the true God. And we all make mistakes so it is hard to look for star in daylight. So just in faith… it is possible. Like that the faith in true God. &  If you think, even expert can be wrong then you have to make the fine research in all most everything so It is hard and some time, it is impossible to achieve so Why we need inappropriate action to find the owner of higher power? So, because of Lack of faith in true God, we do not have the great gift of understanding of things. & All things are spiritually first, to govern by God with glory so closely, Have a look at this world of wonders of yours and then you know the truth, when you listen to your real voice and then Having a strong desire to do the best every day then stick with the best to do your best. And most importantly, try to be grateful for what you have now & try to know where you come from to have the great gift of understanding and then, have the faith to become the best winner in your life. & The Law of mercy cannot rob the Law of justice so Justice demands the punishment of our sin but The Law of mercy requires the forgiveness to give to us and God is perfect in perfection so cannot violate his laws so The God provided the way to our salvation to overcome our sin so Jesus Christ sacrifice is much needed to return to live with God, so Jesus Christ is our savior.

Well, It is the time to make the great decision.

It helps to realize that God will never stop loving you. He knows that we are just flesh, and we are gonna mess up. Jesus is our advocate with the Father. Just loving Him, and having a heart after Him, helps.
