Almost any chemical or biological fluid has a certain character, acidity or lack thereof, concentrated or dilute, with or without substances that may be caustic or irritating to the tissues of the eye. This is why if it's too acid, wash will help. Too basic, same, too irritating....wash, and wash. But if there's been even a slight 'burn' or injury, after awhile, even though the offending chemical or agent has been washed out, the water itself will become irritating.

ONce you have the substance removed, or diluted. an artificial tear, or tear substitute would proved some of the 'normal' substances that have been washed out. That will help soothe the irritation.
