How do you stop the lake from stinking?

My town i built along a wetland that we call Jessie Lake. it was once used for collecting sewage, but they stopped pumping it in about 20 years a go. Every spring the lake reeks to high h**l as the ice comes off and the worst part is the rooting stench fills the local hospital near by and makes people sicker. It has a thick coat of algae on it and is out right gross. Is there anyway that you can fix this?

  1. wot byde said (including the 'hippy' bit! grrrr.)

it must be getting extra nutrients yearly to still be stinking.

in other words, it is still being 'fed', either by sewage, fertiliser runoff from local fields, or possibly something like effluent from a dairy.

if it only smells in spring that's encouraging at least.

    i guess;

methane and sulphur compound gasses, from plant decomposition and any entering pollution, are building up over winter under the ice, and are released when it melts.

then you get the usual spring algae bloom, but bigtime because of the nutient buildup.

    look up 'eutrophication'.

its up to your local council and environment agency to clean this up, you should complain. write to your local paper too, i bet lots ofd people hate it and would join in a campaign.

  2. Don't listen to these hippies. The best way to stop the lake from stinking is to pour in massive amounts of Febreeze and bleach. You'll soon have a beautiful lake that will keep your brights brighter and smell like a fresh spring day near a chemical plant all year round!

  3. cold it be that local, pollution gets in to the lake ,with the rains or direct

The the obvious answer is stop all of that .

If a lake is healthy and has plenty of fish it should not smell

Don`t add chemicals ,because that will kill natural life and it will end up smelling even more ,

try to encourage a natural healthy eco system

with bugs and fish and frogs and water birds

If it has a thick coat of Algae it is already polluted

,because there are not enough fish to take care of the Algae

You better contact some marine Biologists  ,

to try to fix the balance.

search for the source of pollution .and stop it .

Could be a drain with chemical wastes ,sewage in small amounts does not kill fish,so there is either a lot of  it is chemical contamination

do you see many birds ,frogs ,fish etc

if not the lake is in trouble

    Rentacop

    I wonder what that entails,???

I am 63 years old and resent being called a hippy

Almost as much as i resent people who pollute this category with their presence ,just to be anti Environmentalist ,

Like Homo phobics cruising the g*y page to do some bashing.

  4. Maybe you should put up an notice to inform everyone what is going on and that you want to do something about it.  include your e-mail adress so they can contact you for ideas.
