How do you stop undercutting in a backhandspring in gymnastics?

  1. Making your back handsprings longer will prevent undercutting and give you more speed and power. When you are coming out of your round-off, make sure your legs are straight and that you are leaning back (right before you take off for your back handspring). If you are too vertical when you take off, you will go more up than back so make sure you are leaning back in a hollow position. Also, be sure to not take off too early, as that will make them shorter. Having visual markings on the ground where your hands should be should help.

  2. You have to jump backwards and stretch your arms back as opposed to jumping more vertical. Don't arch your back so much.
