Question:

How do you store your child's toys?

My 4 year old son is getting quite a collection of toys that are not easy to store. The biggest problem is the transformers, which he saves up his money for constantly, so he has bunches of them. I don't want to put them in a toy box, because they will break and lose pieces. But he's getting to the point that he has too many to put on the shelf. The same goes for some of his big, bulky toys like his big planes and cars. It's not that he has too many of them (I periodically send my husband out with the kids and "thin out" the toys) but rather that they are just impossible to store efficiently. His room is not that big, so just lining the walls with shelves won't help much. Any suggestions?

  1. I put my children's toys into totes and I have pictures and words on the totes that depict what toys are in there.  Teddy bears and dolls have one tote, legos have another, action figures and accessories in another  you don't have to pile them all ontop of each other, just lay them at the bottom and no need to worry about breakage... it's a great way to help them keep their stuff organized and it gets them to learn to read to ... good luck!

  2. Use a toybox.  Whatever can't fit in the toybox after it is full has to go in plastic storage bins and be put away in the closet/garage/basement/attic/etc.  Rotate the toys now and then so he still has a chance to play with everything.  :)

  3. We use the storage bins that you see in the stores they are any where from $3-$7 depending on the size. We have 7 of them one for each day of the week. We had our daughter help us in dividing all her toys into them. She gets to pick one bin per day to play with. This way she never gets board with her toys and they stay nice and Neat.

  4. We went to Target and bought one of those shelves that hold the colorful bins. They're in the children's decorating section. Can't remember how much they cost ,but our sons have lots of toys like that. We keep the transformers and other toys separate, that way if they do fall apart the pieces are easy to find.

  5. TOTES!!!! Get the clear ones so you know what are inside of them & rotate the toys out every 6 months or so. Then you have the same amount out & the same amount stored! When he gets older, start to add them to garage sales!

  6. Well, if you have a basement, you could put them there, or in his closet. You could put more shelves in the closet or a big toy pin and lay them carefully ontop of one another. They wont break that way and its a good way for him to learn to be careful with his toys so they wont break when hes looking for one. =]

  7. Get the skinny under the bed bins with lids and let him roll them in and out. Buy some drawer bins so he can wheel them around and organize things by drawer or by 3 bin container. Get a toybox for all of his bigger toys--cars, trucks, nurf guns, etc.
