Question:

How do you stretch canvas? Can you reuse the stretcher bars?

I'm wore out buying prestretched canvas. All these art supplies are getting expensive, so I figured I'd try stretching my own canvases. The only problem is I've never done it before and never seen anyone do it. Is it difficult? What do I need besides stretcher bars and canvas rolls?

  1. You will need a heavy duty stapler, gesso (do not neglect to secure your canvas with the proper ground for the painting you plan to do).  I am sure you can find instructions on-line on how to stretch and treat your own canvas . . . just google it!  Poorly stretched canvas will buckle, warp and stretch out. . . leaving you with less than happy results.

An NO, you can not reuse the bars. . . unless you plan to cut your works off the bars. . . .but then buyers usually are not interested in unstretched paintings!  I suggest you buy in bulk and learn how to get where you are going at the least expense.  But then, do factor in your time and what it is worth to you. . . do you want to paint or would you rather spend your time preparing canvas in your productive hours?
