How do you study for a tedious boring course?

I don't have any friends who will study with me because or they want cash which I don't have. Also, if I get a tutor, they never fit my schedule. I think I can learn it on my own if I had the motivation. How do you get through it without feeling bored and miserable?

  1. What I do is break down the lessons with time.  For instance for every lesson I spend about 30min. Then I take about a 30min break and see if I can remember everything I read.  I go back to the lesson and complete checkpoint questions or review questions.  On average, my books lessons are about 30min long and the review questions usually take about 10min to complete.

Try doing the reading part in 30min and then take a break for another 30min or 1hr and then go back to complete the questions and see how long it takes you to do them without going back on the reading.

  2. You get through it by

    1) not worrying about being bored or not liking the material.

    2) changing your focus from whether you like the material or not to learning the material. It's one of the biggest mistakes poor students make is thinking that they need to like the coursework to do well. No, you don't need to like the material. You need to have a drive to learn, to play the school game. If you were to approach it like this is information you need to know and understand to win at, say, "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader", you wouldn't care about whether the information is interesting or not, would you? No, you'd get active in figuring out ways to remember all that information so you can win. Decide that you will win in this course and pretend, if you have to, that you are preparing for a game show. Have fun with the LEARNING and forget the nature of the material.

  3. My oldest son is an auditory learner. Even now in college he enjoys studying auditorily. When he was younger, I was his study partner and it was fun for both of us. Now that he is in college, he takes the initiative to set up study groups with classmates. Sometimes they have met at the library and sometimes the classes have been online classes so they have met online to study. THey have used Cmap's collaborative tool which is great for collaboratively building concept maps, but the system is text chat only which can get a little clunky when you need to study. The best online study environment gives you audio communication, a well tooled whiteboard, and text chat as a back up. Elluminbate's vRoom has been great to provide all that and you can register for the free version which holds three people. That is a great size for a study group/

You may be able to locate a study partner by locating other homeschoolers doing the same currcululum. To locate others doing the same course, post it here in your Yahoo question what curriculum you are using and locate online forums for your curriculum(s). Yahoo groups often has at least one for every curriculum we have used. Try typing in your curriculum name and the words Yahoo Group. Just post in these groups and ask if anyone else is interested.

Here are a few common homeschool curriculum forums:

    Apologia Science Forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Apologia_S...

    Robinson Currriculum Forum:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RobinsonUs...

    Saxon Math Forum:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/saxonmaths...

If you are doing Aplogia chemistry, I have an online class using a bigger Elluminate room (has unlimited seating). If you want study partners for this currciculum, I am sure you will find some students from our class that would be interested or you can join in for our interactive practice days which is basically a study group time.

To get your own free 3-seater vRoom, go to http://www.elluminate.com/vroom/ and register.

  4. think of mind games to "trick" yourself into studying. think of rewards that you could get if you answered a certain amount of questions right. making up games allows you to understand the material your studying and not to get bored with it ! have fun and good luck ! =]

  5. 1)for each lesson u have at school,go back home and think that u are going to explain this lesson to other students tomorrow.get a new note book , read Ur notes from class, read Ur book, then make Ur own writing with Ur own words on the lesson. This should include the main points of the lesson, then a brief description to each point.U can look to the book while writing. This way u have Ur own write up to every lesson in Ur own words, then u use this notebook for  studying and revision for exams, good luck.

  6. Sit in a nice comfortable chair.  Get a huge glass or bottle of water and put it down where you are unlikely to pill.  Get a blanket if you feel cold.  Turn down any noise or distraction.  Read the problem question out loud to yourself 3 times.  Ask questions to yourself on how you would approach to solve the problem.  Use a pencil and attempt to solve the problem.  If you're answer doesn't match with the back of the book, you need to figure out why.  Any big words you don't know, read aloud 5 times and try to understand its meaning.

  7. I am quoting or semi-quoting something I read years ago:  No education is complete without studying something that you don't want to learn, don't care about, and have no interest.

You could look at the tedious boring course as part of your complete education. (smile)
