  1. Most of the Lifeguards at your local pool are trained instructors -- its part of the training they go through.

Many would be more than happy to take your money for private lessons.  You can set up a time that works for both of you.

  2. try asking a friend to teach you then you wont have to swim with little kids and you can spend time with your friends. or look at a tutorial online or something if you don't want to ask your friend

  3. If you have great will-power and interest to pick up again, you can succeed within a few weeks of lessons.

Decide which style is more suitable for you. Breast-stroke needs the least effort, but it is trickier to learn. Front crawl is easier but needs slightly more energy and strength. Get a couple of friends who are already good swimmers, otherwise join a small group with a good coach.

Swim two or three times a week for faster progress. As long as you dont have water phobia, all these years, learning to swim again should be a breeze, esp for a youngster with tons of energy. Once you can manage to cover 20 laps or so continuously you are a good swimmer. Also learn to back-float and swim under-water, as these skills will come in useful in an emergency. Watch some instructions on basic strokes on Youtube to get a clear picture, and to movtivate you further.

    Google "Swim videos free-style, breast-sroke".

    Best of luck!

  4. i really would set aside the fact that the kids r younger and take classes. im 13 too and my mom made me take classes for 5 years. i was with a 7 year old when i was 10. i really just would ignore that cuz it wasnt that bad.

  5. Go to the shallow end of the pool with a good swimmer watching you. Wearing swimming goggles, take a good breathe  and lie flat  in the water face down with your arms stretched out in front of you with your hands just touching. Kick your feet gently trying not to let them break water, or at least try not to splash too much as this only wastes energy. Start the action/movement  at the hip. With your goggles on you will be able to see where you are going and this will give you confidence as will releasing the air in your lungs slowly. Do this until your inhaled air is depleted then stand up. Repeat this process but practise expelling the air for every third stroke then turn your head out of the water and take a gulp of air through your mouth. Continue to do this until you get the timing right and you become "swimming fit".
