Question:

How do you switch from gas to electric in your home?

I am buying a home and it has a gas stove and gas powered washer/dryer. All of the appliances I would be bringing with me are electric. Do you have to get someone to re-wire the house? Or is there another way to do this?

  1. I assume you are concerned about just your appliances, not fixtures in the house like the furnace or water heater.

If the proper outlets are already on the wall, then all you have to do is plug the electric appliances in (and of course cap off the gas lines).  No big deal.  Many appliance retailer /  installers can do this for you.   If the proper outlets are not on the wall, then you will have to call an electrician.

Most houses I've seen that have both gas and electric service are set up for both gas and electric appliances so a consumer can easily use either.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

  2. yes, you need an electrician to run a 220 line to the appliances.

what are you going to do for heat? if you're switching from gas to electric, you'll have to rewire the house for electric baseboard heat if you're going off gas. what about your hot water heater, thats probably gas too
