How do you synchronize a desktop, laptop, and external storage unit together?

I am using Vista Business and I am trying to make automatic file updates between the 3 systems. Does anyone have any useful advice on how to proceed?

  1. There is software that will allow you to sync files. One of them is SyncToy by Microsoft. I've used it before when I used to need to sync files.
