  1. First let me explain that ALL bamboo is NOT invasive.

There are 2 kinds Running and Clumping.  Running is invasive and needs to have a rhizome barrier around it to prevent it from spreading through out your yard and the neighbors.

I am going to give you some links to browse so that you will acctually have a correct answer.

    Running vs. Clumping:

There are basically two kinds of bamboo: running, which is native to temperate regions in China and Japan and comprises the majority of bamboo in cultivation, and clumping, which comes originally from tropical and subtropical areas. Running and clumping bamboos, as the names imply, differ in the way they spread.

All you have to do now is to decide which one running or clumping and then decide where to get your starts.

  2. Bamboo,is expensive so buy one large or thick bamboo in a pot at the nusery.Cut the stems down to about 1foot high and then split the bamboo into about 5-10 seperate bits.Next year you will have a lot of bamboo for price of one.

Bamboos are native to the philippines and so like humid, wet conditions in some sun.The wetter the more they grow.

Three main types are the black stemmed variety (nigra) the yellow (aurea) and green. The green is toughest, the black is the softy, and the leaves can look horrible in winter.Aurea is my fav.

The down side is bamboo, sheds tons of dry leaves all the time, which is messy. They shed to poison the soil,so only bamboo can grow there

  3. There are many types of bamboos. I do not know what you have in mind. They are generally very invasive, so it is good that you will have it in the backyard. However make sure you have enough space for them to spread. Every spring, they will send out new shoots nearby that will grow into new plants. Bamboos are very easy to care for. Water them well until they are established. You can use some general purpose fertilizer or one with high Nitrogen content. Once they are established, you can practically forget them.
