How do you tattoo things realistically in photoshop?

Question

Nothing complicated, just solid black, like a tribal arm band. But I need the shadows and highlights on the skin to look realistic.

I've tried simply lowering the brightness on the area but it ends looking unrealistic. Any help would be appreciated

here is a very simple and VERY effective way of applying tattoos on a body, etc.. Ive used this a few times in the past. Just google some flash tattoo artwork to grab as a sample and follow this tutorial.
