How do you teach 5 year olds how to be a good helper...?

Hi :)

I would suggest doing things initially that are creative.....so your child has fun in the process of "helping" and there is some reward at the end....something like baking a cake or cookies.

Then make sure it is for an occasion where he can take them to school (or a play date) where you can mention " how great it was he helped " to the teacher who will in turn re-enforce the idea that helping is good.

This can then move to simple instruction such as

"can you get me the vegetables darling from the fridge?"

"sweety would you like to sweep the floor for mom?"

you must re-enforce positive behavior with a compliment, hug or acknowledgment  each time so he learns to associate helping you or others is a good behavioral trait.

This helps your child develop confidence and self esteem ....the added bonus is it creates pleasure and pride when he then does something for someone.

this cannot be taught within an hour .....sorry ;)

Bring them over with you to where the job needs doing - ask them to help - like carrying or passing something.  tell them what your doing - and ask them if they have any good ideas about getting the job done.

Once you get them started - you need to keep telling them how helpful they are - and just constant praise.  Just as you would to keep a man helping you (lol)
