  1. I think the best way would be to let him guide his own learning.  Maybe he just can't learn the way they teach him at school (I know that was my problem, and now I'm actually pretty good at it.)  Try using manipulatives so that he can practice his math skills hands on, and most importantly let him solve problems the way he wants.  One of the worst things about math is that there are prescribed ways of doing things (long division, addition etc.) but he may have another way of arriving at the same answer which is just fine for now.

Give him lots of real life situations, so that he doesn't even know that he's doing math.  Let him draw to represent math if he enjoys drawing, and make sure you give him tasks that are easy enough so that he can enjoy some success early on.

Try the website below, but don't focus only on that.  If he's anything like I was he may be so frustrated with math that he finds it difficult to learn anything.  (You'll have to trick him into enjoying it and having fun)  Good luck!!

  2. Slinky gave you a great answer.  I'm also a teacher, and I also hated math.  I learned, though.  Here's some more good sites.  However, I agree that manipulatives are the best approach for a child who is struggling with math.
