  1. I agree with the prior comment. You're child has to learn the alphabet and each letter's sound. Very important...they need to learn how the vowels are pronounced. You should ask the school if they have "I can read" books. These are books specifically developed to teach children how to read. Also, you can try Dr. Seuss books.  They have short words and most of them rhyme and are repetative which will help your child. You're going to need a lot of patience and if you get a bit frustrated do not yell at your child. At that point,  just let your child know that you'll practice tomorrow. The most important thing is for you to be consistent. Set up a story-reading time and make it fun. It's a lot of work. Trust me...I have 4 kids but after a couple of months your child will learn how to read. You'll be surprised how fast they learn. Good luck!

  2. First you must teach them the alphabet and how to properly make each sound of each letter of the alphabet. They must be able to see the letter and make the sound of that letter. Then you have to start of with very small words and teach them to add the sounds together to form the sound of the word. You will of course have to teach the of the exceptions like how in the word brought the gh is silent... ect.

  3. Use a product geared toward helping kids learn to read and learn to LOVE reading!  There isn't any reason to reinvent the wheel here - there is tons of research out there on how kids learn best, and although each child is different, you can learn from this research and use proven products!

Check Usborne Books for their Learning Palette products and workbooks.  These products are made with kids in mind, and are well-researched activities designed to get kids reading.  If your child likes to write and do workbooks, they have options for that.  If your child is more "hands on", like my son, try the Learning Palette - this is a self-correcting non-electronic "toy" that will teach kids alphabet, letter sounds, letter combo sounds,  beginning vocab, rhyming words, and more!  Check them out and buy at http://www.ubah.com/g2687

  4. Make it fun-they are at home and so should be enjoying time away from the classroom:

-Make it into a game eg: go to museums, NAtional Parks etc that might have chidlrens events, quizes, treasure hunts etc.

-Buy quiz books and joke books.

-Label the house (not literally everything)

-Write letters: get them to write letters to grandparents, friends even Santa...part of learning to write is to read so it works for two learning aims!

-When out shopping ask them to find particualr brand or one that says something in particular-you could even give them their own shopping list with words that arent too hard!

-Let them choose some books from shops...magazines are great too as theyare often shorter and maintain interest longer!

-Play words games-like have magnetic words and make funny sentences together-who can make the other laugh the most wins!

Hope some of these ideas help!

  5. I have to say that Hooked on Phonics is a wonderful program! I started my five year old with it in September. Now not only has he finished the five level deluxe program, he can read on a second grade level.

  6. teach him the sounds of each letter then put the letters together.  small three letter words work well.

    Dog

    cat

    hot

    pot

    top

    and so on

use flash cards then put his words he used in a sentence.

    words like

    the

    and

    an

    it

    of

usually just come with repetition and memory.

They make books for beginning readers that come with flash cards !!  Good luck.  Be sure when you read.  You read slow and pronounce each letter correctly

  7. We've had great success with the following book.. approx $20 at amazon.com or barnes and noble... great reviews..check them out...don't just take my word for it :-)

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Siegfried Engelmann  (it's on sale right now on Amazon $14.96...free shipping over $25)

  8. I would start with teaching him or her the letters of the alphabet (both upper and lower case) and the sounds each letter makes.

Then get some very simple books, and encourage the child to sound out the words using what they already know.  If they have to sound it out one letter at a time that's ok.  He or she will improve with practice.

Do a little bit every day, and if the child resists stop.  Make it something fun that the child wants to do, and he or she will be more likely to practice.
