  1. Firstly you should teach any bird to talk from a young age for it can be difficult when they are older.

Secondly, female cockatiels are more aggresive and take a longer time to talFinally, the way to get a cockatiel to talk is to at first not let it hear any words but the ones you want it to say.

Or, another technique is to give it something it enjoys (like nice food) when you say the word. It will then recognise the word as the label for the treat..

You should only get one or two people to talk to the bird at all, or it might get confused at think everyone is speaking nonsense.

It is more likely to talk in the presence of someone they have affections for (the feeder of the bird) than that of someone who is mean or cruel.

  2. I currently have a 9 month old cockatiel called Merlin and he talks constantly. He went through a phase about 4-5months ago and again over this month where he learns very quickly. We did not intentionally teach him to talk. We just talked to him all the time and chose a specific word or phrase like 'come here' or step and we’d repeat it all the time. Eventually the he started to copy us and we found the stronger the bond with him the more he responds to and learns new words. He now talks manly when there’s lots of noise because he’s trying to show off and be the centre of attention

So just keep talking and eventually he/she’ll get there!!

  3. great time to teach it to talk!!!!!!!!! repatition and a regular schedule.

    1. make sure that your bird has clipped wings

    2. make sure it can stand on your finger

    3. DONT GET FRUSTERATED!

    4. hold your bird up to your face, but not enough to bite your nose!

    5. say one syllable words clearly and make sure the bird is focused on you.

    6. if the bird seems to have interest in learning, reward it! positive reinforcement

    7. if your bird begin to talk, DONT talk over it. your bird is trying!

    8. keep repeating for 2 weeks everyday for at least ten minutes.

    9. your bird should be talking in no time!!!!

also remember never to get annoyed with your bird, this could make training hard

  4. I have heard that they are able to be taught... I have one cockatiel and i just took in another one today, because my sister doesn't have time for it anymore....

My cocatiel doesnt talk yet.... i hear that it takes alot of time and patience.... but he will mimic sometimes... If you whistle at him, with different tunes, he will copy you.... And i also have parakeets.... The parakeets mimic the cockatiel sometimes and the cockatiel mimic the parakeets too.  They are all very smart birds.   Keep trying, I'm sure you could get your cockatiel to talk with alot of work, time and patience.

  5. you probably can't.....get you an Amazon parrot.

  6. Yes you can teach a cockatiel to talk if it is a male. Females don't talk, well rarely they do. I have a female and she does do a whistle I taught her (2 whistles) but thats all she will do and Ive tried for 3 yrs. My uncle has a male and if you keep repeating something, he will learn! His bird mocks sirens, songs, a phone ring, he says pretty birdy, kiss kiss, his name, hello and a few more things. Just be patient and persistant and they will learn. I don't think you can tell if it is male or female until about a year in age unless you have had them sexed. Thats what the vet told me. A male is more colorful than a female, thats how I knew. Good luck with you birdy friend.

  7. yes, Cockatiels can talk!

No, not as good as an African Grey or a Budgie, but they can talk.

The trick is basically to keep repeating different phrases llike "pretty bird", the birds name, etc.

make it fun and exciting for the bird and include treats..

go to You Tube and check out the videos there.    Type in talking Cockatiel and you will find quite a few.

Cockatiels are very smart and make excellant pets
