  1. my daughter is also 6 years old and she is already reading on a 2nd grade level. in kindergarten her teacher worked really well to get the kids reading and we worked on it a home with her to. she went into kindergarten not reading at all. we took index cards and wrote simple everyday words on them like and, to, the...just simple words and you sound out the words and have her repeat them. after a few days of this we would hold up the cards to her and she could read them. we started adding more words and by the end of the school year she could read about 50 or 60 words on the cards and also before the end of the year, by doing this, she was starting to read and she was learning to sound out the words as she went. now in first grade she started the school year at a level 3 in reading and she is now at level 12. her teacher tells us that she will be reading on a 3rd grade level by the last day of school.

  2. Well I dont no any techniques, but Books that like say the word outloud when you touch it and stuff is good. I think it is called Hooked On phonix or something like that.  Well just start reading often and say reading time! Then in those couple days she might learn something and make the mother proud!! Good Luck!

  3. I know this wont help but my  kids learned to read on there own

  4. It sounds like your sister-in-law does not read to her daughter. Maybe she doesnt have time, or she has a night time job, but it is sad.

Being read to is one the best ways to learn how to read. Kids learn that words on  a page mean something. Words on  apge can make up lots of different stories. And words can be fun.

I have been reading books to my son at bedtime every day since he was 2 years old. Now he is almost 6 and already he is reading at grade 1 level. He starts grade 1 in the next school year.

  5. use index cards to write sight words on them and then play a game with them.

starfall.com is a good website for children to use for reading.

google preschool worksheets and you can print off some of the letter sound worksheets. another thing we use to take some construction paper, make a bingo out of sight words or abc s and then use index cards (i use these alot) to make a game out of the alphabet and ask about letter sounds.

hope some of this helps. but really there are alot of sites that you can use just type in preschool or kindergarten prereading sites

print off some three letter words and have her sound each individual sound phonetically.

  6. You can't do it in a couple of days but I found that the Cat in the Hat books worked pretty well because of the repetition and sound alike words.

  7. I think it's nice you want to help her but your not going to teach her to read in a few days. Your niece needs to read or be read to everyday.

Take her to the library and find some age appropriate level1 books. What you can teach her is to have fun with it.

  8. Let her pick out a few books and read them to her. A lot. Once you read her one of the books a few times, let her try to sound out the words. If she can't sound out one of the words, don't get mad at her, encourage her, and reward her if she can read a whole picture book by herself. Also, maybe you can write an easy word on the board and try to have her sound it out. Just google it and see what you can find.

  9. Don't worry, she may just be a late bloomer. I didn't start reading full sentences until I was 7 almost 8, now i am an avid reader, I read at a college level, I am in middle school. Just read to her alot.

  10. Is your niece not siting down to read?  If she is not tell her that it will help her so much later on in life with reading and spelling.  It is so important.  The best way to learn is to read it to her so she can remember how to say the words and tell her what the word is made up of and then get her to read it back to you.  Complete this many time.  A lot of patience is needed!

  11. Well both my girls were about 3 we started doing sounds and letters. I got a chalkboard (one that's about 3x4) and we practiced all the time. first take letters. Go through each letter and ask her the sound. Once you have established that she understands sounds to letters move on to words. (Examples: Cat, Hat, Mat, Fat, then move up to Splat, Scat, Flat etc- Then go back to letters- Ow sounds, OO sounds and other common combinations. Then practice words with those combinations.)

After you feel she is comfortable doing the sound aloud words- do the site words. The words you must memorize. The, When, Where, They, Their etc. Make flashcards of these words.

Next- take books you know has words you've been practicing. Read it to her but when you come to words she should be able to sound out- point to them so she can do it. Smile and praise her (even when you have to help).

  12. try Hooked on Phonics, thats what i use when i was that age, now my comprehension is excellent!
