  1. It's also useful if you teach them how to "fall properly" and get back up properly as well. Sounds silly, I know, but it'll help them in the long run.

  2. i always say to people to pretend there stood on a clock.

then push there feet on a diagonal so they skate over the 10 and 2. and keep saying it as they skate!

    worked for me!

  3. Make sure that their skates are tied properly first, with the tightest area being their ankles.  When you get them on the ice, have them hold onto the wall, taking small marching steps.  As they get more comfortable, have them come away from the wall, still taking their marching steps and keeping their arms out for balance.  When they get a little more confident, have them try to push using the sides of their blades rather than their toes like one would in roller blades.  Remind them to keep their arms out and knees bent.

  4. Tell them to waddle like a penguin and never ever ever tell them to "march" or walk.

  5. the laces should be tightest on the top of the foot, not in the ankle. keep your arms out at hip level to keep your balance. try to walk in your skates on the ice. it sounds silly, but its the first step. marching works too.
