I know you can do sign language on the palm of their hand but how do you get them to understand that a certain sign means a certain word?

  1. With a lot of patience, anything is possible.  If the object is "ball,"  sign it into their palm, and give them the object.  Let them feel the object over and get use to it.  Bounce it away from them.  They can feel the vibrations in the floor and will eventually understand that it is a ball.  Then, give it to them and use their hand to bounce it.  It doesn't need to be a high bounce, just enough for them to get the idea.Do the exercise a couple of times a day.  Allow them to do what they would like with it, to a certain extent.  Do it with them for about a week and when you give them the object, depending on their age, have them sign it to you.  Reward them.  It should work.

  2. watch a bollywood movie called 'Black'

  3. Hire Annie Sullivan.

  4. Try using a Braille sheet. After signing in the palm,  help them to "read" the word as well. Be patient, as it could take them a minute to get it. Good luck, and God bless you!

  5. Through touch, for one thing.  You do the sign against their palm and then let them touch the thing the sign is for.  Do the sign for water and then stick their hands in the water, etc...

  6. you'll be surprised how fast blind and deaf individuals learn ... a coworker of mine had taken a man (who is blind and deaf) to Home Depot. The purpose was to teach him the names of  several tools such as hammer, wrench, pliers, etc. and it turned out to be him teaching her the names of the tools. He would finger spell the words then show her his sign for the object. It was really cool to watch and for a day, him teaching her about things.
