Well i placed the computer where my kids can be seen doing things on the computer. I also created a sign that is on the wall that is a contract that says

1.

I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents’ permission.

2.

I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.

3.

I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.

4.

I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.

5.

I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the service provider.

6.

I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.

7.

I will not give out my Internet password to anyone (even my best friends) other than my parents.

8.

I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt our computer or jeopardize my family’s privacy

9.

I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.

10.

I will help my parents understand how to have fun and learn things online and teach them things about the Internet, computers and other technology.

They all signed it at the bottom.

  1. You probably already have, but you can use internet security programs and such to block inappropriate websites AND monitor and keep record of the internet's history so you can stop your kids from going anywhere you don't want them to and you will be able to see where they go on the internet all the time.

Also, continue to stress the importance of being safe on the internet.  Don't scare them too much, but consider telling them one real-life tragic incident that was caused by cyberspace so they realize that the internet really is dangerous.

  2. Sounds good...

My parents never taught me how to be safe on the internet. I grew up with the internet, quite literally - I was born before it was a commercial or public thing, I learned to use the internet while the Google founders were still starving college kids, and I spent the vast majority of my teenage years before anyone even knew what a 'social networking' website was. Anyways, I seemed to be fully aware of everything that had ever been done with the internet from a young age, including the ability to impersonate other people, and the fact that p**n existed on it, so my parents just always trusted me to be safe I guess - though that may have been partially because I knew more about it than they did.

  3. .

My kids each have their own log in and know that I check their history weekly. They are not allowed on after 8pm and are only allowed 30 minutes a day.

I thought I was doing plenty. Unfortunately my 13 year old step-son was a little more creative than I expected and now I have "Net Nanny" software installed on the computer. Sigh.

  4. PARENTAL LOCK

  5. Keep the sign in front of them and you stand behind them.I do not care WHAT they signed. As soon as your back is turned and they are alone, temptation is there.
