How do you tell a 6 year old with Aspergers Syndrome that his dad is to be deployed to Iraq next week?

  1. tell him that his dad is going to iraq and that this place is where people fight with guns and everything and that he might or might not be back.


  2. If your son is like my son then you tell him in a very straight-forward manner.    The less emotion the better, at least for my son.  

    We made a paper chain and for every day dad was gone my son took down one link.   When dad had to be gone an extra 3 weeks I just put up 3 more weeks of links.   It was a more visible way to show him when dad was coming home.

  4. Sorry to hear that, stay strong.  Tell him the same way that you would tell any child.  That Daddy has a job to do and he has to go away for awhile.  Make a calendar to cross off days.
