some male and female dragonflies of the same species have different colors.. you will have to look carefully at the belly and the tail to distinguish them..

the picture on the bottom is the side view of the tail

no real way to tell unless you have a microscope and time to pull a dragonfly apart.  

But it varies from species to species, females are bigger in most cases.
