How do you tell how many rows a pleater pleats?

I am trying to sell one, and someone asked... I have never pleated; how do I tell?

  1. If you are talking about a smocking pleater count the number of spaces for needles and that is the number of rows.  I think it will be 8,16,24, or 32.  It has been a long time since I used one.  


  2. count the little bars and that is how many pleats the thing makes.

    you could measure the size of the pleats and the width of the entire pleater and divide? that is not easy either.

    I would only be interested in knowing the width of the pleats and the over all width of the pleater.
