How do you tell if a corporation needs money from the stock market?

Seems like for some, the stock market is a show. Seems like they make plenty of profits without the stock market? How do you tell which ones need stock and which ones don't?

    (a) sell, on the open market, shares of its common stock that it owns

    (b) issue preferred stock

    Many of the financial corporations which are in trouble have recently issued preferred stock.
