No, i didn't breed anything. I just got my hamster. A girl. One hamster only. But, she keeps eating more and more food, and she looks much more frantic. She also seems a little bigger. And she keeps hoarding lots of bedding in this one little space. How do you tell if you hamster is pregnant?

  1. Hi! Wouldn't that be an unexpected surprise. First thing to consider is how long have you had your hamster? Pregnancy cycles last about 16 days in Syrian and 18 to 21 days in Dwarfs. So, you want to think about how long you've had your hamster and it could it be a possibility to be pregnant.  (Obviously, if you've had her longer than the pregnancy cycle for her type of hamsters, she's not pregnant.)

Other things to consider is Hamsters like to nest to get their cages like home. I actually found my little girl Poppy does it a lot more than either of my little boy hamsters did. She loves moving her bedding around and set up her bedroom (she set it up in the big wheel that comes with the cage). I put another exercise wheel in the cage that she uses. Also, My Poppy is a big eater. She loves to eat her hamster food and vegetables. And I know my girl is definitely not pregnant.

If you think there's a possibility, I would just keep an eye on her for the length of the pregnancy cycle for your type of hamster.

    Good luck! =)

  2. Well if it's a dwarf it'll be difficult to tell until the last few days of birth. Hamsters eat lots of food. My 2 hamsters eat more and more, one had babies and the other is a male. Well some ways to tell is she drinks excessively. When I got my female dwarf hamster, I never saw her drink from her water bottle. When she was pregnant, she would drink from the bottle every 2 hours or so. She will hoard food in the nest. The nest would be huge. My dwarf hamster mom made her nest and it looked like a mini mountain. She might be aggressive. The last few days of birth, her teats will show. If yours is a syrian, it'll probably be noticeable if she's pregnant by the size of her belly. If its a dwarf, it'll really hard to tell until maybe the last week. I hope this helps.

  3. it has a big belly.

or the female and the male are spending lots of time together in the hamster playing tube.

  4. She sounds prego.

She will eat lots and lots. Drink lots and lots. Start building a nest(hoarding lots of bedding). In the last week of her pregnancy you will start to see nipples, thats how you know for sure.

  5. the stomach area will become very visible in the last 2 days of her pregnancy. Probably your hamster is just acting normal since she is still new to her new cage :)  But if she is pregnant then: When the female hamster gives birth, it is very important not to touch the nest or babies and avoid cleaning the cage for the first 3 weeks or else the female hamster could panic and kill the hamster babies. If it is really necessary to 'clean' a cage area while the mother hamster is nursing her babies, you should only use a small piece of tissue to 'clean' the cage but avoid touching the nest area. Provide additional bread soaked in milk in a small food bowl for the mother hamster and babies as this will provided extra protein for these hamsters. The babies can be separated from the mother hamster when they are 4 weeks old as they become sexually mature.
