How do you tell male and female Chinese Algae Eaters apart?

I have a Chinese Algae Eater and I want to know if it is a male or female. Just out of curiosity. How can you tell?

It's very hard, but it's rumored that males have small "thorns" around their mouths, and females don't.

Btw, as CAE's grow, they lose their algae-eating ability and start to attack fish. Plus they grow up to a foot. Just some quick info ;)
