How do you tell the sexes of an axolotl apart?

have just got two and would like to know what i have got.. my dad is big on breeding them have had two before but they died and never bred

  1. There's really only two reliable ways, both require the animals to be of mature size, the first being the more accurate -

    - sexually active males will have a more swollen 'cloacal' area than a female

    - mature females often have much rounder bodies compared to males because of the ammount of eggs they carry.
