  3. I heard from a biology professor that once, right before a big earthquake all the snakes in his class had climbed up towards the top of their tanks.

  4. I work with a few snakes at a nature center.  The way that our snakes show that they are scared are to go into their hide boxes or try to 'escape' what ever it is that is scaring them.  They may also coil up into a ball or a pile to take up less space.  They may also shake or 'twitch' a little bit.  Some snakes are able to musk, or release an odorous substance, if they are afraid.  Even snakes with out rattles may shake and rattle their tails if they feel threatened, and as a last resort, they will strike.

  5. Well, I don't really know, but when I try to get a snake off my lawn, if they get cornered, they try to act macho, show threat displays to try to make back off. So if the snake tries to act macho, he's scared I guess, but look around a little more because I might be wrong.

  7. my dad said they might rattle if they are scared.
