How do you test bleach hair to see the effect it does to the hair?

I'm doing a science project for Physics. I chose to do the effects of dying and bleaching on hair.

But I don't know how to test it out.

Does anybody know how to test bleached hair to see the effect it does to the hair? Or to see if it'll damage the hair? Or the comparsion between non-bleached, non-dyed hair?

I would like to know what I need, the procedures (if you can), costs (if any), etc.

Please and thank you!!

  1. I remember recently on some makeover show they had a woman who did things to her hair....and so they tested it to see if it was in ok condition to put permanents in it....I think they tested it with ammonia....her hair nearly dintergrated ( the hairdresser had never seen that happen before)....can't remember if it was ammonia per se, but it was definately in it.

  2. well i bleached my hair before. you basically do a strand test and see the time it takes to get the shade you desire. then when you find the shade you want and know the time it took. you bleach the desired parts of your hair for that time. uhm.. for damage; i can help you too! simply,  put a strand of bleached hair and put it in a tub of water. See if it floats - healthy hair floats. damaged hair doesn't. I would say for your experiment you should see how long does a strand of hair need to be bleached until it is damaged (when it sinks).
