Question:

How do you think I handled this?

Ok, I've always enjoyed football, but more specifically kicking and punting. This is my first year in high school and I decided to drop quarter back and focus what I am really good at (kicking/punting). I am a two step punter and average about 50 yards a punt with a maximum of 68 yards.

Now my coach is forcing me to play tightend (a tackle in the option offense) and linebacker. He says if I don't hit I can't kick. We have 80 kids on the team and I think it's plain bullshit. I've never been good at hitting and I don't get a kick out of it. The coach is a plain nut, I was kicked, yelled, hit, swore and spit at because HE thought my name was Brad. So a day or so ago I wrote him a letter on my views and I want to know how you guys think I handled the situation.

"Dear coach,

I am emailing you so that I can fully express my opinion on your

statement that you "Don't carry just kickers" without having a hat

thrown at me or having to be yelled at in my face for a simple

question.

I came to play freshman football this year to continue my kicking and

get excel in the position. I had no intention of playing a hitting

position such as Tightend or Linebacker. I am not someone who gets a

jolly out of hitting someone nor am I one of the kids who can't wait

to wreck someone; I don't have that kind of intensity. I don't find

that fun, I find kicking fun and if I can't do what's fun I don't know

what I am doing at practice. I can't change shoes mid game to kick a

field goal or punt the ball then go back to tightend; that wouldn't

work. It's not fair to the players who DO want to play tightend, and

may excel at it when I may be holding them back because I am forced to

play a position that I am not suited for or could continue it up to

the varsity level. I also don't understand why I must be forced to

play a contact position to kick when there are eighty kids on our

roster. I mean, I would not mind at all to roll out on a punt and get

killed. It's comes with the territory. But to force me to play a

position I don't to to kick just seems ludicrous to me. I'll work just

as hard as everyone else, running, working out you name it; I just

won't play a hitting position, I just don't have that drive or

intensity. I just feel defeated that I have to play something that

just won't work out and is not beneficiary to me.

If you feel that I must still play a hitting position to kick, take

this as my resignation letter. I'll be happy to turn in my pads Monday

and I'll be out next year for JV and make sure Clayton knows I only

kick so there is ZERO confusion. If you change your mind I'll be out

Monday and we can talk.

Sincerely,

John"

Well this is the first time I've ever even fathomed quitting a team, I really and conflicted in myself because of this.

Thanks.

  2. ok your coach needs to learn the laws first off. but you acted just fine. i am a kicker myself and i do not enjoy hitting people i find it boring. its fun from time to time but not enough to play that position. i've told my coach and team i will NOT play anything other than kicker. they make fun of me but i just deal with it. but yeah if he is forcing you to do something you don't wanna do you shouldn't have to at all. so resigning if he forces is totally understandable. from one kicker to another.

  3. I think you handles the situation quite maturely, I would've done just the same in your situation. Hope it works out between your coach and you.
