  1. More bicycle friendly streets, solar powered vehicles, mass transit in having more trains, higher speed trains, incentives for public transportation... just look at Europe.  The money may have to come from taxes though.

  2. I would like to get creative and design a whole new infrastructure, where cars going up a hill function as counterweights for cars going down it, gondola style or something.  Have you ever seen Robots?  Very inspirational as far as creative transport mechanisms go; the comfort factor could be improved, though.

Also, why not used compressed gas to store energy?  Or you could power cars (or train cars) from a central source: either electrical or mechanical and store the energy as elevated weights.

I guess I am saying how the transport system could be totally redesigned.  Many will say this is not practical, and, well, it would take a lot of advertising and investment to get any major change on a large scale like this to go through.

The current transport system could be improved by using regenerative braking, and, I guess, hydrogen fuel cells, and electrically powered cars.  If we want to keep the same infrastructure (roads), we need to focus on how we're going to generate energy: wind, solar, etc., and how we're going to store it modularly: batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, pressurized air tanks??, etc.  Boring, boring, boring.  Why have small change when you can have big change?  Why have roads when you can have tracks?  Roads interrupt the water table.  Elevated tracks wouldn't even interrupt ecosystems that much (i.e. less road kill).

  3. high speed rail systems maybe running on hydrogen
