  1. There are many tips and ideas to make your gas dollar go farther:

Carpooling - share the ride, share the cost.  Switch out days so it isn't the same guy driving every time.

Walking, riding, taking the bus - you mentioned this yourself.  The bus is a fuel hog, but when a 5mpg bus has twelve people in it, then those people are getting 60 man-miles per gallon, each.  And buses carry a lot more than just 12 people.  Walking and riding your bike fuels your mobility with sandwiches, and maybe works off your winter weight.  Can't beat that.

Hypermiling - pump up the tires to the max inflation printed on the tire sidewall.  Leave five minutes earlier and drive 5mph slower - it's astonishing what a difference that makes on the highway.  Look far ahead - see a light turn red?  Start coasting now - maybe it'll be green by the time you get there.  If the light's been green for a while, ease up on the gas, there's a good chance it's going to turn red before you arrive.  No point in rushing toward that.

  2. the high prices are from the drop in the dollar...the increase in oil use by china/india...the oil use in USA and britian has been flat...walk and bike??? i live 10 miles over a mountain from town...18 wheel log trucks and a mt on one side and cliff on the other

  3. one small thing you can do is to inflate the tires. it might seem insignificant but it actually lowers your gas mileage by 10% if you are underinflated by 5 psi.
